TRANSCENDING

April 11th, 2012

There are very few things that will transcend from generation to generation and help keep the fabric of society together like music. Regardless of your likes and dislikes everyone enjoys music in one form or another. For some it is opera that hits the spot or classical or hip hop or techno but music is something everyone can enjoy whether they are a musician or not. Since the earliest days music has been a part of life and just like in the Bibles numerous references of singing to the lord to today’s concerts music not only is a part of lives but tells a story of time and human nature. Another part of music is the countless stories we have heard about individuals overcoming various issues and perform music Without music we would have no Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles both of whom are blind or Francis Scott Key who vividly told us of the battle that helped free out nation and give us independence. Children from a very early age are sung too in order to calm and relax them and people are sent to action by the words of a song much like a book or scenery can move us so can music and the songs will fill our hearts and minds with thoughts and ideas. Music is everywhere and an appreciation of music is inevitable. We are blessed with talented individuals, new sounds and songs that inspire us every day with music. Music is an international connector around the world.

COUNTRY WESTERN

April 10th, 2012

Of all the styles of music over the past century no one genre has had the staying power and popularity of Country music or country western as many know it. Country seems to come and go but is never far away no matter what type of music seems to be popular. With its twang and lyrics that talk about losing jobs, significant others and a man’s best friend being his or her dog country has produced as many if not more musical artists as any brand of music. Country icon always be found in the south west and southern regions but with roots in the cowboy lore and mans plight through thick or thin country always seems to stick around. Go to any rodeo and you will hear country, want a sad song about discontents look at country music. Want a song about overcoming adversity and strong wills you will find a country ballad that will fit the bill Country music always seems to be reinventing itself and the performers who sing it are always quick to give respect to the music’s pioneers that put it on the map in the first place. Country music is the music of America and no matter what genre there are artists eager to sing country style music even if they change the sound a bit. For those who don’t like the twang associated with country there are mainstream artists who satisfy their itch and desires as well as country crosses over into all genres of music.

DISCO

April 9th, 2012

During the late seventies rock and roll was taken over on the music scene with a type of music that was new and seemed to take the world by storm. Not only was the music different but it inspired the fashion industry and the movie and TV industry alike Disco was born and with it a new attitude. Drugs like cocaine became more acceptable and popular and disco venues like the famed Studio 54 was established along with other Discotheques around the world. Celebrities flocked to it Movies were written about the culture and style of music and brand of dancing that was truly unique to the disco world. Even clothes changed as tight fitting pants with bell bottoms and silk shirts began to monopolize the clothing stores in an array of colors and designs. Wearing a shirt half buttoned and covered in gold chains the disco era grasped the world helping old artists like the Bee Gees reinvent themselves and new artists like Donna Summers emerge. No style of music was like disco incorporating a new beat to new and old tunes and a rhythm designed for the dance craze of the time. Like its predecessor rock and roll this hard beat music was here and is still performed in a variety of ways from the Detroit music scene to California and New York and all over the world. This was a music all its own and today you can still find disco nights all over the country.

GARY MOORE

April 7th, 2012

Gary Moore is one of the lesser known great guitarists of our time. He was born in Belfast, Ireland, April 4, 1952.  His first musical interest, as for many of us, was Rock and Roll. Inspired by artists such as Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and  John Mayall, his first  groups included Skid Row and Thin Lizzy, groups from the United Kingdom. He also toured with banks like the Allman Brothers Band and Mountain, in the United States in the 1970′s.

In the late 1970′s, Gary Moore’s solo career began to take off. He seems to have found his niche in the Blues. His soulful lyrics and music tell stories about real people and real emotions. If you listen to songs like Parisienne Walkways, Story of the Blues, Separate Ways and many of his other so called Ballads, you will find that his music speaks to something inside all of us about the frustration and pain of Love and Loss. The music and lyrics pull sad memories from our personal lives and let us re-live those times again, but now with the knowledge that these things are a part of all of us. Yes, many times, the memories are painful, but they are in the past, and are survivable. They are part of the human condition, and many times teach us great lessons about life’s promise of possibilities, even after heartbreak.

Sadly, Gary Moore passed away on February 6, 2011 in Estepona, Spain. He was taking a short break from his recording career, ready to return from his “vacation” , to begin recording new studio tracks for his latest project. Alas, he passed away in his sleep while on this break. It was not to be. The world lost one of the best guitarists in the Blues genre. His music speaks to me, personally, every time I hear it. Gary Moore’s music truly does…

April 6th, 2012

In the eighties music started to make a change from the disco era that had been so popular and a new wave of music was form filling a void that listeners were looking for. There were several performers who became one hit wonders during this time and no true musical identity was really beginning to form except for this one female performer who got her start in the East Coast underground and was really beginning to make a name for herself. It was at this time that Madonna took the music world by storm and has continued to rediscover and re create herself through the evolution of music. With looks all her own the material girl

has starred on screen, been married to famous actors, and led a public life that is second to none. No matter what is going on in the world the world wants to know what is going on with Madonna and what new type of music she is going to put out. Madonna has become an icon and several young performers have tried to duplicate her career and re invent themselves like Madonna has but there is no body with the ability to be like Madonna pumping out hit after hit and exposing music to different styles the Madonna has. BAD BOYS

April 5th, 2012

In most parts of society we can find good and bad and this is no different in the rock and roll industry where the Rolling Stones with front man Mick Jagger have long been considered the bad boys of the rock and roll world. By today’s standards the Rolling Stones are fairly mild but at a time when the British explosion hit the American shores the Rolling Stones were considered the bad boys compared to the squeaky clean Beatles. The band long known for wild partying and drug use performed all over the world and for more than six decades has been one of the top performing rock and roll bands ever being inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame the first year it was open. Stories of wild sex, drugs and mayhem have followed the Stones throughout their career and with few changes to band members the Stones still perform today led by lead man Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards. Mellowing in their latter years the band is not on tour like they once were but when they perform they still provide a taste of the early days with large stages and a collection of hits that would make any musician envious. The Rolling Stones clearly have shown their durability and sell out whenever and where ever they perform and even as grandfathers and way past their prime are still considered an  act for the ages. If you like Rock and roll you probably like the Stones.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

March 30th, 2012

There are characters that dot the history of the music business and are known as much for their music as they are for their personal antics. Willie Nelson is a true character in the music industry and for decades has been in the spot light not only for the great music he delivers but also for his passion for marijuana and commitment to the American Farmer. Wilson has performed in movies and TV but his real home is in his bus touring the country singing hit after hit or on stage where he has performed for decades.

No stranger to controversy Wilson has faced court appearances for drug use and income tax evasion but for one reason or another Willie finds a way to stay on the road to perform for his fans. Wilson is also revered by his peers joining forces with several well known musicians to perform duets and group songs no one belts them out like Willie a true pioneer in the music business. When the farmers needed help Willie showed his sense of community founding FARM AID a concert designed to raise funds for the farmers and bring attention to their plight and year after year Willie performs for FARM AID while contributing millions of dollars and time and effort to his cause. Willie Nelson has a sense of responsibility and uses his star power to bring issues that are important to the fore front. You might not like his politics or his love for the weed but you need to admire Willie for sticking with it.
